Members joined us for an unforgettable IVY Art & Film Tour at the iconic Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston as we enjoyed a guided tour of ICA’s highlighted collection, featuring the U.S. debut of Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steven McQueen’s video installation, Ashes. McQueen was awarded the WEB Du Bois medal at Harvard University in 2014 for his outstanding contributions to African-American culture, an award also given to the late Maya Angelou, Oprah Winfrey, and architect David Adjaye. His latest work, Ashes, presents a two-channel video — one side showing a young and handsome fisherman named Ashes as he playfully balances on a pitching boat; and the other recalling Ashes’ unforeseen fate. Never seen together, yet linked by a shared soundtrack, the videos conjure an easy vitality and a vivid description of place against the darker forces of society and fate. Following the tour, we headed to the museum’s Water Cafe to enjoy a complimentary drink and lively conversation with a great group of IVY members.
