Members joined us at the renowned San Francisco Opera for an unforgettable performance of The Source, a stunning work praised by The New York Times as a “21st-century masterpiece” and a “fresh model of how opera and musical theater can tackle contemporary issues.” The Source dives into the world of Chelsea Manning, the whistleblower who leaked hundreds of thousands of classified documents containing detailed accounts of the U.S.-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Video installations displaying the Twitter feeds, cable news reports, chat transcripts, and classified military video accompany the work as four singers and seven instrumentalists perform in tune. The mesmerizing and haunting composition was the winner of The New York Times “Best Classical Music Recordings” in 2015. Before the performance, we gathered in The John M. Bryan Education Studio for an exclusive welcome reception co-hosted by SF Opera’s Bravo! Club, where we enjoyed complimentary drinks, hors d'oeuvres, and a discussion focused on the formation of SF Opera Lab and how its impact on San Francisco Opera has helped disrupt the notion of grand opera.
